The company is also removing the Canvas feature from GPT-5.5 Instant and GPT-5.5 Thinking. Canvas is the side panel that sometimes appears in ChatGPT when users edit text, work on longer documents, or preview code. Instead, writing and coding tasks will be handled directly inside the chat through dedicated blocks. Paid users will still be able to access Canvas for a limited time through older models.

OpenAI is also retiring older models in ChatGPT. OpenAI o3 will be removed from ChatGPT on August 26, 2026, after a 90-day transition period, while GPT-4.5 will be retired on June 27, 2026, after a 30-day transition period. Until then, both models remain available to paid users through ChatGPT’s model settings. These changes apply to ChatGPT only, with no API changes announced for o3. GPT-4.5 had already been discontinued in the API earlier because it was too large and costly to operate compared with the value it provided.
