OpenAI’s first smart speaker is expected to cost between $200 and $300. According to The Information, the device will feature a camera and facial recognition for purchases, and will use video to analyze its surroundings to offer proactive suggestions, such as advising users to get enough sleep ahead of important meetings. A court filing by Vice President Peter Welinder indicates that deliveries are not expected to begin before February 2027.
OpenAI’s hardware team, which now exceeds 200 people, is also developing smart glasses (with mass production unlikely before 2028), prototypes of a smart lamp with an uncertain market launch, and the audio wearable “Sweetpea,” positioned as a competitor to AirPods. A smart pen called “Gumdrop” is also reportedly in development, with Foxconn expected to serve as the manufacturing partner.
CEO Sam Altman has suggested that at least one device could be unveiled in 2026, while competitors such as Meta and Apple are also working on their own AI hardware.
