OpenAI Vice President Peter Welinder stated that the company reviewed its naming strategy and decided against using the name “io.” The filing also notes that the first hardware device is now expected to ship no earlier than late February 2027, later than previously indicated. No packaging or marketing materials currently exist.

In May 2025, OpenAI acquired the hardware startup founded by former Apple designer Jony Ive for $6.5 billion. Over the weekend, a fake Super Bowl commercial circulated online claiming to show OpenAI’s device. OpenAI spokesperson Lindsay McCallum confirmed to Wired that the company had no involvement with the ad.
